GIBRALTAR - LAST BASTION OF EMPIRE

Rest day.  The four intrepid explorers (again without Ted who has done it all before) set forth at 10am to do Gibraltar.

Following coffee I'm Ocean Village we wandered along Main Street, past M&S, BHS and Next to the cable for the ascent up the rock (450 metres).  The first thing we encountered were the famous Barbary apes who were very friendly.

Having taken in the views we then began the long walk down via the Mediterranean Steps.  However, before we got to the path the heavens opened so we sort sanctuary in a cafe for a bottle of Gibraltar Beer ( brewed in the Isle of Man!) and a Cornish Pasty.  As the rain stopped we set out down rough hewn steps,  too many to count before finally arriving at the Pillars of Hercules, the end of the ancient world.  On past the Botanical Gardens to Trafalgar cemetery where officers who fell in the battles of Trafalgar, Cadiz and Malaga are buried.  Then began the long trudge through the border back to the boat, arriving very weary at 6pm.
